Principles of Community Week

March 13th - 17th, 2023

Virginia Tech’s Principles of Community Week is our annual celebration of the fundamental concepts that support InclusiveVT, our institutional and individual commitment to Ut Prosim (That I May Serve) in the spirit of community, diversity, and excellence. These principles reinforce our aspirations for a diverse and inclusive campus, where we can freely express and explore ideas in an atmosphere of empathy, civility, and mutual respect.(from https://vtx.vt.edu/articles/2022/03/president-principles-of-community-week-2022.html)

The Virginia Tech Principles of Community is an aspirational statement that speaks to what we want to be as an institution. At its core is the belief that Virginia Tech is a community built on respect for all people and each of its members share in the responsibility for upholding its values. Every March during the week following spring break the Office for Inclusion and Diversity organizes Principles of Community Week to commemorate and reaffirm our commitments.

This year’s theme is Moving from Words to Action.  During the week of March 13th-17th, faculty and staff have the opportunity to participate in twenty-one workshops to learn skills for calling people into community and holding each other and ourselves accountable.  There are also links to self-directed learning opportunities.  Workshop topics include conflict resolution, mindfulness, and communication just to name a few!  There are limited spaces available for the in person workshops, so it is important to register soon.  The in person workshops will be held at the TLOS University Mall location, 801 University City Blvd Suite 21, Blacksburg, VA.  Many of the workshops are hybrid or virtual.

For the first time, there is the opportunity to earn a Principles of Community Week digital badge.  Participants earn badges by completing workshops and/or self-directed courses.

Partners include:  Office for Inclusion and Diversity, Office for Equity and Accessibility, University Ombuds Office, Technology-enhanced Learning and Online Strategies (TLOS), Department of Human Resources, Center for Cooperative Problem Solving, Graduate School Office of the Ombuds, and Office for Learning Partnerships.
