The InclusiveVT Summit

The Inclusive VT Summit 2023 (formerly the Diversity Summit) held this year on Wednesday, August 16, is an annual InclusiveVT Touchpoint event that brings together diversity and inclusion stakeholders across the university so that we may prepare for the upcoming academic year.

Our keynote speaker leading discusions will be David Stovall | Black Studies | University of Illinois Chicago (uic.edu) with respondents, Menah Pratt, Vice President for Strategic Affairs and Diversity, and President Timothy Sands.

Recordings of live events and online presentations will be available on the Canvas event site through the fall 2023 semester. A recording of the morning sessions will be on the Inclusive VT YouTube Channel.

Antiracist Pedagogy: Key Concepts and First Steps

Shaila Mehra, Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences

Takiyah Nur Amin, Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, in Architecture, Arts and Design

In this session, you will learn key concepts in antiracist pedagogy that are applicable across disciplines and can benefit all students. Understanding antiracist pedagogy as a practice, participants will engage in hands-on activity to examine faculty positionality and standpoint, explore how to revise course content and design and learn about classroom practices central to antiracist pedagogy.

Gender Inclusive Language & Practices for Everyday Use
Ashleigh "Bing" Bingham, Director of the Pride Center
Haleigh Wallace, Assistant Director of the Pride Center

This session will focus on the expanding vocabulary brought forth by LGBTQ+ activism and how it plays into our day-to-day interactions with others. We'll spend some time learning about human diversity in terms of gender identity and gender expression as well as sexual and romantic attraction. We'll also take a look at how we can degender and/or increase gender inclusivity in the workplace.

How Staff Contribute to the Inclusive VT Mission

Tamarah Smith, Business Operations Specialist, Office of Summer and Winter Programs, and 2022 Principles of Community award recipient.

This session, led by Tamarah Smith, explores the critical role administrative staff play in fostering an inclusive campus environment. Drawing from her prior experiences as a representative to the Board of Visitors, President of the Staff Senate, and long-time participant in DEI activities, Smith shares opportunities for involvement and learning.

TRAIL - Transformational Allies for Inclusive Leadership

Participants of the 2023 TRAIL cohort share their plans for enacting inclusive initiatives in administrative units across campus.

Academic Allies for Inclusive Excellence

AAIE--formerly known as White Allies as Transformation Leaders--engages academic department leaders in personal reflection and a community learning for the purpose of creating an inclusive academy. The 23-24 cohort of White Allies will discuss their plans for moving forward and welcome the new cohort of academic allies for inclusive excellence.

#firstgenready: Virginia Tech as a Destination for First-Generation Students to be Successful

Tamara Cherry-Clarke, Senior Assistant Dean, Dean of Students Office

This spring, Virginia Tech was selected as a First Scholars institution. A designation assigned to an exceptional network of institutions committed to sharing evidence-based practices and resources, generating knowledge, and building upon the first-generation initiatives already in place. Join this session to gain insight into the work of the First-Generation Student Success program and learn how you can contribute to the retention and graduation of our first-generation Hokies.

What is AANAPISI?

Wa:oki Indigenous Community Center
Nina Ha, Director of the APIDA+ Center

Drs. Nina Ha and Melissa Faircloth provide an informational session about Virginia Tech's federal designation of being an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution.  They recently received a five-year, $2 million dollar grant from the Department of Education to support the APIDA (Asian Pacific Islander Desi American) and Indigenous student populations at Virginia Tech.  This designation also opens opportunities for collaborations with others seeking federally funded support for Minority Serving Institutions like Virginia Tech.
